With nineteen teams and over 80 participants, MDSA’s Golf Day Challenge 2012 was a great success and raised approximately $10,000 for Muscular Dystrophy SA.

Following the competition, players enjoyed a three course lunch in the clubrooms complete with auctions, raffles and prize presentations.

BIG RED RIDE

On the 14th of January over 250 riders put their muscles behind Muscular Dystrophy by participating in the inaugural Big Red Ride.  Lead by Stuart O’Grady, Luke Durbridge and Lee Howard from the all Australian Green Edge team, riders enjoyed a scenic seaside ride from Glenelg to Outer Harbour and back.  Families, amateurs and seasoned riders alike received celebrity treatment from members of the public lining the streets to cheer them on along the way.  Before and after the ride, riders relaxed at Wigley Reserve to enjoy live music by band No Two Ways, cool drinks and a BBQ cooked by fantastic MDSA volunteers, as well as great coffee from our sponsor, CIBO.

Muscular Dystrophy would like to thank Stuart O’Grady, Luke Durbridge and Lee Howard from the GreenEdge team for leading the Big Red Ride.  We would also like to say a huge thankyou for the phenomenal effort from everyone who participated on the day and who has fundraised to support MDSA.  Click here to view selected photos from the event on this web site or you can view all photos by clicking here which will take you to our facebook page.

 hat-comp-w

On Sunday 23 October 2011 MDSA held its annual World of Trivia event at Pulteney Grammar School. Entering into its 21st year the event featured the best and brightest local students in South Australia whilst raising funds for Muscular Dystrophy. Muscular Dystrophy South Australia is delighted to announce that we have raised a total of $25,000 this year which we otherwise would not have been able to do without the schools involved hard work.

This year we had 15 schools participate and the town of Whyalla coming on board for the 1st time this year. Students in years 4 -10 from schools across SA will be putting their heads together with a range of year level appropriate quizzes whilst raising funds for Muscular Dystrophy. It is a great event which encourages involvement in the community, teamwork and awareness of Muscular Dystrophy.

The MC for the day was David Lampard who is the director of his own science communication business, “That Science Guy”. Thank you David once again for MC the event.

Congratulations to all the students who raised money for Muscular Dystrophy and to everyone involved from the schools to the teachers. I hope that you will be able to jump on board for our World of Trivia next year held on Sunday October 21 2012.

MULTICULTURAL FEAST

The Multicultural Feast which was held on Saturday the 9th of July 2011 was the culmination of a series of small “Women In Events” which were held over the past 18 months.  Muscular Dystrophy approached a number of restaurants around Adelaide asking for their support for this evening to help children and adults who live every day with a Neuromuscular Disorder, and the response was amazing.  The event was a sell out with 110 people paying $65.00 per head to enjoy a night of fine food, wine and entertainment.  The evening kicked off with guests arriving and enjoying a complimentary drink before making their way to their allocated tables.  The Unley Civic Centre looked fantastic with flags from many countries strung up around the room, feast booklets, candles and small flags on the tables to get guests into the Multicultural mood.  MC for the night was Kate Warren who welcomed everyone and thanked them for coming  and also introduced the first course which was already on the tables for guests to enjoy.  This was donated by La Tombola and was an antipasto consisting of cheese, salami, pickled vegetables, olives and sundried tomatoes.  Second course was donated by Barossa Fine Foods  and was bratwurst with sauerkraut.  Guests were then treated to a Teno Singer Taso Bouyessis who was truly amazing and his voice left the room in silence.  Taso then introduced Oprea singer Anna Maria who together with Taso sang a number of songs that were just incredible.  Third course of Singapore Noodles was supplied by Rundle Spice.  Guests were then given a small break to look at the wonderful silent auction items before heading back to their seat for the next course.  Fourth Course was donated by Vietnam Kitchen and was grilled chicken with lemon grass.  Fifth course  of  Butter Chicken with rice was then sent out and was donated by Raj on Taj.  Kate Warren then introduced a Bollywood Dancer “Nayema” who was just beautiful and enjoyed by all.  She got a number of guests up to show off their belly dancing skills to the sound of Indian music.  Many laughs were had and everyone really enjoyed Nayema’s performance.  The sixth course was donated by Tongue Thai’d Cafe and was a lovely light seafood salad.  During the evening guests were encouraged to buy a $20 bottle of unknown wine from our Wine Wall.  It was like a bit of a lucky dip as some wines were worth $10.00 and others $100.00.  Many people purchased a bottle with some being pleasantly surprised with the wine they received.   Seventh course was also donated by Nu Thai and was a serving of prawn and chicken dumplings.  Kate Warren then introduced Stephen Venn from Brockharcourts to run the live action.  Items went under the hammer and it was great to see the support from our guests by raising theirs arms and bidding.  All the live auction items were so kindly donated and raised the following:  Alfies Wine Tours $1000.00, Signed Acrylic Painting by artist Jacqueline Coats $150.00,  Wine and Roses Bed and Breakfast $500.00 and a bottle of 1994 Henschke Hill of Grace $700.00.  Once again the guest were treated to entertainment this time being Greek Dancers Jim Mountzouris and John Kourbelis.  They certainly knew how to work the crowd as most of the 110 guest ended up on the floor trying out their Greek moves.  After rocking the floor and getting the guests back to their seats course number eight was served.  This was supplied by Steph’s Kitchen and was a Greek Yiros.  The final course for the evening was platters of Lamingtons from Kytons, lemon andpassion fruit tarts from Queen of Tarts and Loukamathes made by MDA’s own Maria.  The music from the Greek Dancers played well past middnight with guests still dancing, drinking and having a wonderful time.  It was a little difficult to end the night which only proved how much of a great time everyone was having.  Muscular Dystrophy would like to thank all those who attended and supported this event.  Many months of planning and time was put into making this evening a success and if it wasn’t for the support of the restaurants involved, staff and volunteers it would not have been such a wonderful evening.

The total amount raised for the evening was $12,227.00

Big Red Quiz Night 2011

Saturday 25th June

flyer

The night kicked off with many eager quiz goers turning up just before 7pm, They headed to the bar to gather refreshments and made their way to their tables ready to begin.  By the time we had called eyes down for commencement of round 1 we had 120 heads in the door.  The night included 10 rounds of general knowledge questions with continuous raffles drawn all night, games, puzzle sheets, who or what am I’s, all interspersed between rounds and many a good laugh was had by all.

Kate Warren as Quiz Master did a fantastic job, oozing her charm all night, and keeping the evening flowing along on schedule.  The Continuous Raffle tickets drawn each round were a great success with 50 prizes handed out.  Other activities included Heads and Tails, Who or What Am I, Whiskey Coin Toss which was a popular activity and drew many people with a prize of a bottle Jonny Walker Whiskey.

The silent auction was a huge success with 25 donated items all being successfully bid on and won throughout the night. To all businesses, small and large, that supported us with generous and kind donations I cannot thank you enough, without you this night just wouldn’t have been possible.

We would like to thank our volunteers involved from ticket sellers on the night, to the bar staff, who worked tirelessly to quench the thirst of our patrons, Kate Warren for her outstanding efforts as our Quiz Master and anyone who I may have missed that helped bring this night together.  I would also like to thank Graham who worked on the scoring and producing the questions for the night.

A very big and special thank you to all participants who came along to support MDSA, another fundraising aspect of the night that was a success. I hope that everyone had a great night out, won some prizes and will be joining us again next year. Thank you all for coming along and supporting the night. Approx $5000.00 was raised on the night, so a HUGE thanks.

WOMEN IN “Z U M B A”

 photo-11

On Tuesday night the 12th April 2011 approx 50 women attended a Women In event to demostrate the new way of excerise

Z U M B A

Zumba eliminates the work from working out by combining amazing, irresistible mix of the rhythms of salsa, cubia, Latin, samba and more

The evening started off with a glass or two of wine supplied by our contining supporters Wirra Wirra Wines plus finger food prepared by our very own Steph.

It was then time to shake our booties and boy oh boy we sure did.  Most of the attendees hit the work out floor and by the end we were all exhausted.  Many giggles, wrong moves and bad coordination made for a very entertaining 45 minutes.  Special thanks to Tania and her girls for a wonderful introduction to ZUMBA.  The night was a wonderful success with money being raised from entry fees and raffles.  Please click here to view photos from the event
